Protestant church leader and lawyer Nguyen Van Dai, and a fellow member of the Brotherhood for Democracy were released from prison on June 7. and immediately put on a plane from Hanoi for Germany, according to members of his banned group and an exile pro-democracy group.  They arrived along with Dai’s wife, and will now begin the asylum process. Forced exile has been a tactic used by the Vietnamese authorities in recent years.

On April 5, Dai had been sentenced to 15 years in prison and five years of house arrest on charges of ‘attempting to overthrow’ the Vietnamese government.
