In January 2008, Alimujiang “Alim” Yimiti, a Muslim convert to Christianity, was arrested and accused of “subversion of the national government and endangering national security,” a crime punishable by death. On 27 October 2009, Alim was handed a 15-year prison sentence for “providing state secrets to overseas organizations.”

In November 2010, the Higher People’s Court of Xinjiang accepted an appeal by Alim’s wife and mother and decided to retry his case. In February 2011, the Higher People’s Court of Xinjiang notified Alim that they upheld the original sentence of 15 years of imprisonment.
